G5 won\'t connect to server
I\'m at the end of my rope simply trying to network two Macs running Tiger 10.4.11. I have a 933 mHz G4 Quicksilver w/ 2 HDs and a 1.8 gHz G5 iMac. I have a cable modem connected to the G4 with ethernet and have connected the two computers via firewire. The firewire IPs seem to be set properly and the G4 has no problem accessing the iMac\'s drive. But it\'s the G4 I wish to use as the server.
The problem is that even though Network Utility shows the two machines communicating, the G5 cannot access the G4. Its network icon appears but the alias is non-functional. Command-K shows the G4 by address and name but the Connect button is unresponsive. I\'ve noticed that the only router IP is shown in the Ethernet Config. of the G4. If only there existed some step-by-step guide on configuring the necessary IPs and subset masks. It seems like it should be a simple problem to fix and I\'m astonished that no-one seems to know. Help? |

G5 won\'t connect to server
Hi and welcome
I have a bunch of questions to start....like does the cable modem have only one ethernet port and why do you want to connect by firewire, when you are already connecting by ethernet? This article although its about an earlier version of mac osx seems promising http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/20...ernet.html if you change the airport connection to be the cable modem it starts to make sense...see what you think Search the forum first Search the internet second, (sometimes just typing your question into google will reveal an answer). Always come back and tell us the answer, this will help other mac users! |

G5 won\'t connect to server
Thanx for getting back to me.
Ethernet was my first thought but ALL feedback by techs and on forums has been FIREWIRE ONLY. No one can understand why the G5 can\'t see the other drives this way. But I can\'t help but think everyone\'s overlooking something too simple to believe. I\'ve messed with firewire IPs in Network Preferences until I\'m blue in the face. Ran Network Utilities to make sure signal was being exchanged between computers. I\'m just an artist but I\'m not having luck finding experts who can suggest what I haven\'t already tried. To sum up: the modem has one ethernet port. Same with both the G4 and G5. I\'m open to any suggestion at this point and would like to know how to run an ethernet connection and set the preferences. The modem is connected to the G4 and I\'ve got a waiting ethernet port on the G5. I just don\'t want to mess up the broadband. Oops. That\'s 3 Ethernet ports and only one is open. I want to use the faster processor on the iMac but access the beefier drives and apps on the G4. Help? |

G5 won\'t connect to server
Yep. Tried it in an analogous configuration. No go. No matter what, the G5 says there is no network even though it sees the G4.

G5 won\'t connect to server
my feeling is this isn\'t going to work, my resoning is that its to do with the power running through the firewireports on the G5, my research tells me they are seriously underpowered sharing 8 watts between two FireWire 400 ports. Even the G4 laptop had 7 watts on its firewire port.

G5 won\'t connect to server
Thanx for getting back to me!
I finally got the problem mostly solved. I simply connected the modem\'s ethernet cable to the G5. Figured that MIGHT solve the main issue. I had to call the cable co. to reset the modem and voila. Once I was online the G5 updated some OS files and THERE WAS THE QUICKSILVER! I just knew there were missing files somewhere. For some reason the G4 still had no problem seeing the G5 but will only connect through Recent Servers. Command-K responds with \'the server either doesn\'t exist or is presently offline\' or some such. That\'s odd. On to the next prob. Can\'t seem to share the Epson printer or Microtek scanner connected to the G4. Right now they really need to stay there and I\'m hoping a router isn\'t necessary. Any thoughts? I\'ve installed the printer driver directly into the iMac, thinking that might help but I can\'t seem to configure it quite right yet. I might try connecting the USB hub into the iMac as well and see if that helps anything. I can\'t get rid of the second keyboard just yet. One word on getting this far: Between the two monitors, the extended desktop is GREAT! |

did you turn printer sharing on and set that up on the mac with the printers connected?
