Time Machine won't restore - 1426
Mac newbie here, please be gentle!
I just downloaded/installed a 3rd party font manager on my intel-based MacBook (last gen of white case) running Leopard 10.5.8 and ran into some glitches. Tried to sort it out, but the software ultimately started crashing. I thought it best to \'cease & desist\' and start over with a clean slate. When I tried to do a Time Machine restore, I got the 1426 error message. Where do I go from here?
Many thanks!

First do a check of your fonts using the built in font book, then use a disk utility to ensure your disk is OK. I prefer Techtool Pro at present though i will use Disk warrior.
\"TechTool Pro 5 (Mac DVD)\" (MicroMat)
OR Diskwarrior

\"Diskwarrior 4.1 (Intel Mac/Leopard)\" (Alsoft)
Whats the name of your hard disk, as a name with an apostrophe can bring about this error!
I would also use this widget to give more detail of what is happening with TM

Then get back to me

Thanks for your help!
Don’t know what you mean by “do a check of your fonts in font book”. What exactly am I checking for? I did take a look at font book and all of my fonts appear to be listed in ‘All Fonts’ section, but I will note that I had deactivated most of them when setting up FontExplorer X, so they are shown as being ‘off’. I think all the system fonts are currently activated, but I’m not sure about that. Are there certain ones that must be activated? Need more specific guidance here.
I have DiskWarrior and ran a disk rebuild. Still getting the same 1426 error message with TM.
Again, I’m sorry to sound so clueless, but I’m not sure what you mean by the “name of your hard disk”. Where do I ascertain that?
The initial window for System Profiler (accessed via the apple icon) says Startup Disk> Macintosh HD. But when I open ‘More Info’, the window is headed Aden-Nicholss-MacBook (top line), next line: Aden Nichols’s MacBook. Could this be the problematical apostrophe you mentioned? If so, how do I change the name?
I also downloaded the TM Buddy widget and the log seems to be showing normal activity as far as I can tell. The path it is copying to does include the HD name as Aden Nichols’s MacBook. Is there some specific data that would be helpful for you to see, and is there any way for me to copy it (cut/paste)?
Again, many, many thanks!

Aden

Your Hd name is the name underneath the icon on your desktop, the computer name is Aden Nichol\'s etc and you can change that in the system preferences>sharing I would change it to this Aden_Nichols_Macbook.
Fonts in font book, I would turn them all back on, then highlight all fonts and go to file>validate fonts in the menubar and see what occurs.

Changed Hd name and validated all fonts (they all checked out OK). TM still produces 1426 error message.

I think you should look at this Apple article:

I read the discussion and after picking my way through the tech-speak (as I said, I\'m a noob), it seemed like they were saying that the apostrophe in the computer name is definitely a no-no, but that after fixing it, that still didn\'t correct the problem with TM. That is my experience as well. I\'m still getting the 1426 error message.
I did download the TM Buddy widget and it would appear that TM is performing the backups OK, I just can\'t access them!
Comments like these in the aforementioned thread are of little help to me: \"The error really is \'we don\'t know what the error is\'\" and \"It fixed it by itself after some prompting on my part.\"
Can you please offer more specific help? What steps should I take next? I do appreciate your patient assistance!

I would now get back to basics:
1. Please do a permissions fix using the disk utility
2. Please download and install the apple combo update for 10.5.8
its here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_O...mbo_Update
you must check this is the right one for your mac before installing. This will ensure all your software is installed and working correctly.
Where or what disk does time machine back up to? IS this disk in good order, have you done a file check on that disk? using first aid or disk warrior?
If things still go awry but your mac is no working smoothly , it may be that you have to start again with TM
