I have worked through the list, but no luck. No-one else seems to have the same problem - I can find lots of stuff online about the red light being stuck on in the optical port, but none of it flashing.

Thanks for trying to help. It looks like it is not fixable.

Ok lets try a couple of last ditch things:

1. fix permissions using the disk utility found in the Utilities folder,

2. Run the software update to get al software up to date

then restart.

after restart

Try plugging in a set of headphones and see if you get sound. If you do, unplug them and see if the issue is resolved. Or plug in the cable you used to make the sound transfer and take out again.

If not, try resetting the SMC.

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button.
5. Attach the computers power cable.
6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

I have uploaded a screen shot as you requested, and another of the Audio Midi Setup. As you can see on the second one, the computer thinks it has no Audio, all the settings are greyed-out, and nothing can be changed.

Perhaps we will just have to live with the problem.

But many thanks for trying to help

we have started to use camino again as it is so fast, whilst firefox has endless plugins it can slow ff down. We have loooked at Chrome and find it a little clunky.

In our opinion Safari could do with a simple plugin interface

Try this:

To use the Mac OS X audio drivers:

Open Audio MIDI Setup (in Utilities folder) and click the Audio Devices tab.
Choose Default Output: Built-in Output and System Output: Built-in Output from the pop-up menus.
Then set audio output to 44.1kHz 2-channel 24-bit

Under Properties for: select Built-in Output.
Set the Audio Output Format to 44100.0 Hz. 2ch-24bit
Quit Audio MIDI Setup.

You may of course have damaged the MB, but if so thre would be liekly to be more far reaching problems.

Did you instal LAME with audacity

If you go to the apple menu and 'About this Mac' click the more info button, then go to Hardware and highlight Audio, what does it say can you upload a screen grab of this?

Thanks for your reply. System Preferences says that there are no input or output devices installed. The volume bar is therefore greyed out.

The only software I installed was Audacity. The computer was ok until I turned up the volume on the hifi. Someone who works for Apple has told me that is what caused the damage. The optical out socket has a red flashing light in it now.

By the way, when googling the problem I did find advice on resetting the optical output port, which I tried without success.

I am fairly sure the motherboard is damaged as there is no start-up beep. But I don't know if that would mean an external sound card won't work.

Hi

Look in applemenu>System Preferences>Sound

then check what the outputs are set to

also at a basic level check the sound is on and not muted, and the volume is up, connect some headphones to see if anything comes out.

To make the analogue to data conversion did you install any software on the mac that may have grabbed the sound, obvious examples are products such as "sound flower" though there are many more.

Please can anyone help. i tried to use a cable to transfer old cassette tapes from my hifi to my partner's imac. Now it has no sound. I understand after much googling that there is no sound card on an iMac, just part of the mother board, and I have blown it up. There is no beep on startup, and System Preferences states no input or output devices are found.

I realise it would need a new motherboard to fix it properly, which would cost nearly as much as a new computer. But I found a suggestion that a firewire external sound card might be possible.

Can anyone tell me if this is true, and what to buy if it is. Nothing fancy, just sound capability. I don't have any idea how it would work, or whether the external sound card has it's own speakers and microphone. The suggested product was Griffin FireWave External 5.1 Sound Card for Mac. Or is the computer not capable of using it now I have damaged the mother board /

The computer is a 2007 iMac, running Mac OS X 10.4.11

I would be very grateful for any advice as I am obviously in big trouble ! I was using free Audacity software, and nowhere were there any warnings that i might cause damage.

Hi Lynne

best way to remove someone from previous recipients list is:

Start typing the recipient's address or name in a new message.
Select the desired address from the auto-complete list as if you'd compose an email to them.
Click the small down arrow in the recipient.
Select Remove from Previous Recipients List from the menu.

You will also need to check they are not in your actual addressbook application, open addressbook and search from them then highlight the name of the person in the middle column then go to 'edit' in the menubar and click on delete card.

what is that tractor thingy?

Ok what configuration is there in parallels under network adaptor

Configure should be something like this but not necessarily the same: Network Adapter 1/Enabled/Connected/Bridged Ethernet/Default Adapter

Is the windows security/firewall blocking network connection?

We tend to use VMware here as we had so many problems with parallels.

It is most likely power issues related to your battery which is worth replacing if the powerbook still does the job however....

Have you tried resetting the pmu (power management unit)
PowerBook G4 15″ & 17″ (1.5 Ghz or above)

Disconnect your power adapter and remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for five seconds.
Reconnect your battery and power adapter.
Power on your PowerBook.

All Other Aluminum PowerBook G4s

Hold down the Shift, Option, Control keys and press the Power button. Do not press the function key.
Let go and wait 5 seconds.
Now power on your computer.

I have a Powerbook G4 running 10.5.8 that's having power issues. I have it pugged into a power outlet constantly because the battery is finally dying after 6 years. However if I run certain functions, such as using Quicktime to convert video formats, the battery indicator on top of the screen changes from the plug symbol (indicating it's fully charged) to the charging symbol as though my Mac is using more power than it's taking in so it's draining the battery at the same time. Another problem is that I've been using a LaCie external hard rive for a couple of years and now suddenly it won't dock it. When I try plugging into the USB 2.0 it kicks in the way it always has but now it just won't dock. I thought the HD might have gone bad so I purchased a new Toshiba HD and had the same problem. I was told by customer support that the HD wasn't getting enough power from one USB 2.0 to dock so that it would have to plug into both USB 2.0's to work. I think this is also the reason my LaCie HD won't dock. These problems started a couple of months ago and I don't know if it's related to my battery being old or if I'm having a seperate issue with the power on my USB connections. If I plug in something simple like my iPhone or flash memory it works fine, it just won't power my hard drives. I would appreciate any help I can get... Thanks.

there are easier processes, that you can try first, but this is the bottom line. The difficulty you have is you can not start the disk/partition and you cannot even start the disk/partition in safe mode.

it could be the partition is damaged!

However before we go to the tough route have you :

1. disconnected all peripherals...printers, scanners, etc etc and tried to start

2. Reset the PMU/SMC for your mac, you dont say which Mac you are using, but this info can be found here for intel macs:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

follow this apple advise here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417

If none of this works then try using your system disk to do what is called an archive and install to the partition that doesn't work, info found here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710

You should also try and back up any important files on the partition if you can see it fine when the avid partition boots.

it looks like a FAT disk in other words one that is formatted in a MS Windows format.

I would try a more complex disk utility on it, like DIsk Warrior to see if this can help

My Western Digital external HD just failed, completely out of the blue without any hint it was going to happen. It's less than a year old and unfortunately has a lot of work on it, most backed up but lots is not (which I know is bad and I should do, but regardless...). What I want to know is, does anyone know of any likely recovery ideas for the info on there?

ohhh no :-/

Thats a lot for one thats not so good with this.
First of all will this bring everything back or will I loose some things?
Second could you be very specifick with the order.
I now Carboncloner will make an exact copy...right?
Do I clone the real HD or the partisions one at a time.
Would it be better to use the snowleopard drive and from there clone the other drive?
I didn't partition the drive myself so I don't know how?
Do I partition before cloning?

Can I do this on an internal drive.? I have 2 internal HD that are striped together for AVID Media Files I could tempoarely pull them out and insert a new internal drive?

Could I just insert a new blank HD create the 2 partisions on that instal the osx on them and then migrate from the partiotion drive with the bad partition?

Oh my head :-/

Yes you could take the ram out and check it a stick at a time and loads of other stuff, but in the end you will need to try this//Ok my solution will be a long and arduous one//

You will need an external hard drive as big as your internal hard disk and carbon copy cloner. ( http://www.bombich.com/ )

I would clone your hard drives to the external disk by booting from the partition that does work. partition the external drive just like you have your internal one

I would then reformat the mac hard rive writing 0s to the drive, this will recatologue any bad blocks, repartition the drive and then reinstall a vanilla OSX from the install disks and bring them as up to date as you can with software update. Then use the migration tool to bring the old data and applications etc back to your mac from the clones DO NOT CLONE them back.

No I did not install or delete anything.
At first it would just restart itself after 2-3 minutes of gray with apple logo. But this stopped after reinstalling comboupdate.
There is 92 GB of disk space.
I have tried to reset PRAM but when released it boots up on a whole different drive with snowleopard on.
It will not boot in safe-mode.
Yes I ran all but hardware test (since the other partition is working)

Also I have tried to boot in single user mode (not that I know what it is) but that works.

Welcome

Some basic questions to start.............

What did you do just before things went wrong? Did you install anything extra or delete anything..what automatically starts at boot time? (few questions in one there)
does it have enough disk space to start
Have you reset the PRAM (option command P R at the startup ....release on the 3rd or 4th chime)
Will it boot in safe mode, that is shift key depressed at start up

Did you run all aspects of diskwarrior including file check and so on? Or just the disk catlogue volume repair?

Please get back to us with more info

Well I have a HD with 2 partisions one with AVID on (10.5.8) and one with all other programs. (the latest 10.5.x) They booth have been running fine for over a year.
I have been booting from both of them a lot of times every day.
Then suddenly last week I could not boot from the program partision.
I get to the gray screen with logo and spinning time indicator.
Then after a while it restarts itself and thid goes on 4-ever.
The disc shows up fine on the desktop I can start programs on it from the other partision.
I repared the parmissions. I installed the comboupdate 10.5.8.
This "fixed" the quit and reboot thing but it still stops at the gray screen with logo and time wheel. Today I got the latest diskwarrier update I ran this it fixed some minor things but it did not fix the boot issue.
I'm desperate to get this working again pleaaaaaase help

Put the Disc in and restart, holding the C key to make sure your Mac boots from the DVD.
Once its restarted and before you are asked to install anything You’ll find a Utilities menu that includes a Reset Password command. Do it, then restart, holding down the left mouse-button.
If you used FileVault Security to encrypt your home folder, then things are a bit different.Because it is unfortunately not possible to over ride the FileVault password…you must never forget it or you will need to reformat your disk and start again.

Our advice is : ALWAYS BACK UP…just in case

Hi and welcome to macmend.com

Please search the forums and blog for answers before posting

Please try when you ask for support to put as much information as you can. To start with, which Mac you have, which Mac OS are you using and when did the problem start...did you or were you doing anything in particular...adding a file, application etc to your mac etc before the problem started.

Please try to state if there is a problem when things last worked smoothly and what you might have done in between times. Software installed or deleted, hardware changed, a new process and so on.

Then please put as much detail about the problem as possible, for example my computer wont start is not as good as I press the power button hear a wirring nosine but no sound and the screen stays black OR I press the power button and the grey screen with the apple comes up but gets no further. These two examples are both "my computer wont start" but have different solutions.

Pleae be patient we will get to your problem.

Please tell us which mac you have , which Mac OS you are using and when this problem began. Have you downloaded Firefox or Camino and attempted the same things in these browsers to see if the problem is specific to Safari?

I primarily use Safari because it was default browser when I got my system and I don't have many problems with it. I use Firefox for any things that don't work with Safari because I like the icon and it is a popular application.

I'm having trouble viewing street view with Google Maps when I try and view the map in street view all I see is a black screen. I would say that I have been having trouble with other websites as well but I do not want to draw connections between things that aren't necessarily related which might lead to incorrect solutions. I'm using Safari.

OK, then sounds like they have done something wrong, I dont want to sound mean but my suggestion is to take it back to them, if you have had the hard drive replaced and the have done other things then they will know.

If they have done these things right there is no reason why everything should not work, iPhoto for example ispart of the standard install and should just work. Did they clone your original disk, or reinstall the software. If all they did was clone the original disk and copy it to the new disk they will have copied all the problems created by the old failed disk!

"Up and running" means that I had to have the hard drive replaced. I've since had it to the Apple store where they ran whatever they had to do to get the basics right. Now I'm trying to get the apps to work. Iphoto is the first one I'm working on. So should I update to 10.4.11 before anything else?
BTW - Thanks for the help.
