Please can anyone help. i tried to use a cable to transfer old cassette tapes from my hifi to my partner's imac. Now it has no sound. I understand after much googling that there is no sound card on an iMac, just part of the mother board, and I have blown it up. There is no beep on startup, and System Preferences states no input or output devices are found.

I realise it would need a new motherboard to fix it properly, which would cost nearly as much as a new computer. But I found a suggestion that a firewire external sound card might be possible.

Can anyone tell me if this is true, and what to buy if it is. Nothing fancy, just sound capability. I don't have any idea how it would work, or whether the external sound card has it's own speakers and microphone. The suggested product was Griffin FireWave External 5.1 Sound Card for Mac. Or is the computer not capable of using it now I have damaged the mother board /

The computer is a 2007 iMac, running Mac OS X 10.4.11

I would be very grateful for any advice as I am obviously in big trouble ! I was using free Audacity software, and nowhere were there any warnings that i might cause damage.

I have a Powerbook G4 running 10.5.8 that's having power issues. I have it pugged into a power outlet constantly because the battery is finally dying after 6 years. However if I run certain functions, such as using Quicktime to convert video formats, the battery indicator on top of the screen changes from the plug symbol (indicating it's fully charged) to the charging symbol as though my Mac is using more power than it's taking in so it's draining the battery at the same time. Another problem is that I've been using a LaCie external hard rive for a couple of years and now suddenly it won't dock it. When I try plugging into the USB 2.0 it kicks in the way it always has but now it just won't dock. I thought the HD might have gone bad so I purchased a new Toshiba HD and had the same problem. I was told by customer support that the HD wasn't getting enough power from one USB 2.0 to dock so that it would have to plug into both USB 2.0's to work. I think this is also the reason my LaCie HD won't dock. These problems started a couple of months ago and I don't know if it's related to my battery being old or if I'm having a seperate issue with the power on my USB connections. If I plug in something simple like my iPhone or flash memory it works fine, it just won't power my hard drives. I would appreciate any help I can get... Thanks.

That should eject the disk.

The final option is to restart your Mac while holding down the left mouse-button. Or try this great little utility found here: disk eject

Then suddenly last week I could not boot from the program partision.
I get to the gray screen with logo and spinning time indicator.
Then after a while it restarts itself and thid goes on 4-ever.
The disc shows up fine on the desktop I can start programs on it from the other partision.
I repared the parmissions. I installed the comboupdate 10.5.8.

My Western Digital external HD just failed, completely out of the blue without any hint it was going to happen. It's less than a year old and unfortunately has a lot of work on it, most backed up but lots is not (which I know is bad and I should do, but regardless...). What I want to know is, does anyone know of any likely recovery ideas for the info on there?
