I haven't been able to log in despite putting in my name and password. This happened once before but I don't remember the procedure for fixing it.

Can anyone tell me why this problem exists. My mac is less than a year old.

    Key Master

    OK first

    - Put your Mac OS X installer DVD/CD in your computer
    - Restart the Mac holding down the "C" key. (This will start up from the disk)
    - Select your language
    - From the UTILITIES menu select DISK UTILITY
    - Select DISK FIRST AID
    - Select your hard drive
    - Click to REPAIR PERMISSIONS
    - When complete, quit DISK UTILITY
    - Quit the installer
    - Restart your Mac normally (Don't hold the "C" key)
    - Remove the DVD/CD from your computer.
    - Reconnect your peripherals (iPod, iPhone, external hard drives).

    If this doesnt sort it

    - Put your Mac OS X installer DVD/CD in your computer
    - Restart the Mac holding down the "C" key. (This will start up from the disk)
    - Select your language
    - From the UTILITIES menu select RESET PASSWORD.
You can then choose to change password for the old username, but also the root. Change the root (administration) password and reenter.
Now quit the installer and reboot normally with the startup disc.
Login with username: root and the new password. (Maybe you have set your mac to automatically login and thats ok. Just as long as you get to where you can go to the SYSTEM PREFERENCES and choose the accounts (two people in silhuet icon). Here you can select your old username and because you have the root login, you may enable administrator privileges to this username.

why this login happens can depend on whether you started your new mac with a vanilla install or whether you imported data from an older mac to this mac,
