PROBLEM: My MACBOOK freezes at random, and I don't understand why, I haven't done anything wrong with it, I have normal amount of 3rd party software installed on it. The freeze/crash happens usually once a day or two, the freeze looks like that everything stops responding, but no beach-ball shows or anything, everything stays at its place and you cannot do anything and the computer doesn't even go to sleep when you close the display, you cannot even move the cursor, the only thing how to stop the freeze is to turn it off by holding the off button until it shuts down. Not a lot of applications are running when the freeze occurs. I tried to delete some of them which I thought that are causing the crashes but nothing helped. I am usually running a web browser (mozilla firefox or other) with a lot of tabs when the freeze occurs, but I doubt that it would cause the problem, I have a big RAM memory, which was upgraded from 2GB to 4GB right before the mac was shipped from the distributor (TRACO COMPUTERS SLOVAKIA), maybe the RAM could be the cause of the problem, something wrong could be with it but I haven't observed any strange behavior . When booting up the computer after the freeze, in trash I have file named "Recovered files" and in it are some temporary files, usually .XML files.

What should I do ? Should I reinstall the system or what ? I had my macbook for only like 3-4 months, I have got it for christmas. Is there any solution, or something that I should try ?

    My system specs are :

    Macbook white (older version)
    MAC OS X 10.6.2
    4 GB RAM (800 MHz DDR2 SRAM)
160 GB hard drive - 24 GB used

Beside my basic response of runnng some maintenance routines using mainmenu or OnyX (both can be found at macupdate) these will delete problem cache files, fix permissions and more.

YOu will also need to check if the disk is OK by starting up with your Install CD and running Disk Utility and using the disk repair/first aid tab. A more sophisticated repair tool like "TechTool Pro 5 (Mac DVD)" (MicroMat)will not just fix your disk but can also check your RAM and other hardware.

However I would look for a utility in the Utilities folder called Activity Monitor and run it where you can see it, this may tell you if an application is grabbing all the CPU. Downloading and using the istat pro widget will also tell you this stuff and more.

So my response...maintain your mac, ensure nothing is wrong with the Harddisk and then monitor it by looking at the way applications interact with it.
