two questions here

Hi and welcome, we are a small but slowly groing community, sometimes active sometimes a bit dormant, but welcome anyone with a mac who may just be asking or may have something more to offer...news, articles, software and hardware reviews..whatever.
we have always tried to not be elitist and help people new to mac who just want plain answers in plain english

1. YES you should have adequate virus software and run the windows security and firewall. VM ware comes with a free virus protecton for a year I beleive, if not both Norton and Intego do a virus package that protects both windows and mac when using a Virtual machine like VMwre or Parallels

2. Start up time can be determined by a number of things, check in your systems preferences>accounts>"your account">login items and remove any you dont really need. (the > sign denotes a file path, so you go to system preferences then Accounts etc etc)
Do some system maintenance using OnyX or MainMenu (both free/shareware) and run cron jobs, fix permissions, delete caches and redo prebinding

Hi ,first ever post here so sorry if this has been asked before (not quite sure how to use this forum yet ).

I have a late 20072008 white Macbook, running 0S X. I have boosted the ram to 4GB, the maximum it can go, if this is useful.

For the past six months or so I've been running VM Ware with Windows for work, only because of certain programmes and things like that. It's all working fine (I think) but I have a few queries and I'd been really greatful if someone could answer them:

1. Do I need virus software for Windows? I'm only using a free Spyware detection programme my Dad downloaded for me but do I need something else?

2. I've noticed that my Macbook's start up time is becoming longer. I have run disk utility a few times to repair disk permissions and this has improved the situation slightly. Is there anything else I can do to improve start up time?

Thanks in advance

Tiger should run fine on a G3 as will classic but components of classic will need to be updated.

Any "tiger' you buy on ebay, should not be a version that comes from a specific mac issue as many of these now only install on the mac they came with.

It needs to be a standard issue generic version of tiger, 10.4 basic will do as your net connection will allow an update to 10.4.11

I'm in a pickle. I have a G3 blue and white 350 with 1GB memory and using Panther 10.3.9, 74 GB hard drive and it says I have 58 GB available. With a pioneer DVD-RW-110d. I am not sure if I have a built in Firewall, but I believe I do. How do you check?
The problem is I bought a new Ipod for my daughter, and I need to upgrade to itunes 8.0, currently using version 7.5, but in order to upgrade itunes I need OS x 10.4.9 or later, which is Tiger, right? Will my old G3 handle Tiger and what should I look for if I shop for one on ebay? And would still I be able to run Mac classic with Tiger like I can now with Panther? A lot of work just for a little old ipod. Remember to read and check labels before you buy!
Thank you,
Roger

two main things will effect your speed:

1. Can you icrease the amount of RAM, I think the imac dome can take 1GB of RAM

2. On older macs with less RAM using mac osx you must keep a large amount of disk space free, I suggest around 5 GB minimum. This is better in contiguous blocks , so a defrag using techtool pro would help.

and a third might help...OSX maintenance routines

use disk warrior to optimise the indexing of your hard disk, then use OnyX or a similar utility to redo prebinding, delete cache and fix premissions.

Hello,
I have a 15" G4 iMac (the one with the dome and swivel screen), which I know is pretty old now. I plan to get a new Mac some time within the next year or so, or as soon as I can afford to, but in the mean time it's pretty pokey. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for freeing it up and helping it work better. The main thing is it will pretty often just drag while thinking and it's just a waiting game. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, itunes and Safari all pretty regularly, and others occasionally as well and I'm running OSX 10.4 (Tiger). I have 512 MB of SDRAM and 700 MhzPPC processor, as well as an external HD if that helps. I've also recently slimmed down my fonts pretty considerably thinking that that may help but it still drags. I assume there might be some preferences etc that I can set with Illustrator and Photoshop that might help them run a little smoother but not completely sure. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas or reference links, etc, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!
Ben

The likelihood is that it is formatted in a Windows format, and this is effecting the view, does it show up in 10.5 when you launch disk utility, if it does why not remove any data added on another machine and try reformatting in a windows/dos format. it should then show up on PC and Mac

Dear Forum,
I have a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.4 and I bought a PNY Attache 4G flash drive. It works on my windows machine and my Macbook Pro running 10.4.11 but it will not show up on the desktop for the Macbook. It is recognized in the System Profiler but I can't get to it because it won't show an icon. I have looked at many forums discussions and PNY website. Any ideas?

Sincerely,
Matt Penn
